For this Pressure Project, I took the song stuck in my head, and decided to use the emotion it evokes to craft a narrative around the topic of software piracy. In re-reading the prompt in writing this, I realize that I missed the entire goal of storytelling via sound/music. With my goal of creating a narrative ON an existing story, the light-hearted music provides a heroic undertone contrasting the condemning/cryptic nature of the audio about the crackdown and response to criminal acts, to have the viewer question the morality of the real life act of piracy and also question the romanticism we have for “sea-shanty pirates”. Also referenced is a scene from the movie Princess Bride, where Dread Pirate Roberts is a moniker passed around in that universe, which internet icon Ross Ulbricht also takes on as a pseudonym to run the internet “ebay of drugs”, Silk Road.
This was created using Adobe Premier Pro CC, and my first time using the software in 8 years.
I enjoyed the process of presenting the project and having the class share their reactions with each other and with me. Their reactions were well articulated, and I now realize how to process those reactions in light of how the prompt actually reads.
Given the prompt again, I would pick a different topic to portray in order to actually tell a story. Though I failed to tell a story, I feel like I created successful a narrative that was effective both to entertain and to start meaningful discussion.
