The Mystery House Final Presentation

Preface

The master house is an idea of an interactive house that is a cross between an escape room and murder mystery theatre. It would include live actors and interesting technology to create the illusion of magical things happening within the manor. The house itself would also lend to the fact that it is changeable. It could be anything from a period mystery to a sci-fi thriller.

Below is a short powerpoint.

Presentation1

The model itself is a rapid prototype that could be used to show investors or partners that would hopefully be interested in taking the project further.

My Isadora patch for my presentation is set up using scenes to trigger different effects.

I used an interface called Palette Gear to set up triggers within Isadora.

My model was still projection mapped in Isadora from one single pico projector.

This seemed to be a user friendly way for a viewer to interact with the model

Each Scene is a different effect such as footsteps on the floor or a door creaking open.

The Problems I Found

I quickly realized that because my interface had little to no labeling that it was impossible to figure out without my prompting.

I also set up my scenes so that an event would happen and then the scene would resolve, then you could try something new. Although to me that worked, many people wanted to just keep pressing buttons so in retrospect I could have put triggers in every scene.

The most important thing I learned about this project was that sometimes it is ok to be process over product. I find that while I create theatre I am so focused on the product that i don’t take time to refine my process. It was refreshing to be able to do the opposite.

Cycle 1 Reflection-Mystery House

Mystery House

For my first showing of my system, I had built a 1″=1′ scale model of a room with 2 walls. thumb_IMG_4354_1024

This section of a room was projection mapped with  one pico projector through Isadora. Insolently when I set up my Isadora session it was not registering my Key so I lost my file from this session, leaving me to remake it for the final presentation.

The few things I was able to show during this presentation were

-Widow Effects such as a moon with clouds or a storm

-The lights turning on or off

The feedback I received from my peers was enlightening.

It was suggested that I make an interface for the viewer to play with rather than it be presentational. Also that audio would add greatly and to think about including headphones.

Overall my first round achieved what I wanted and even more I was given valuable feedback.

Pressure Project 3

I was super excited to do pressure project 3. I have a lot of background in playing tabletop/board games so I found this only challenging in the limitations. I knew immediately I wanted to use a game my friends and played many times, which is similar to pictionary and telephone mixed together. I just needed to find another game to meld with it. I knew, because of my large collection of dice, I wanted to use dice.

I did a bunch of google searches and pintrest searches for dice games. After reading 3 or 4 I found gambling game that was interesting and alterable.

Then I just let my own creative juice run to create a narrative story that involves both of those two games.

This was the final project.

Pressure Project 2: The Tell Tale Heart

Pressure Project 2

So for this project my personal goal was to pull a physical response from my audience. I chose Edgar Allan Poe’s Tell Tale Heart because it is one of my most favorite stories from my childhood.  It also is a story that is easily told with just audio. My first choice was to try and tell The Tale of the Beetle and the Bard story of the three brothers, but the concept was frustrating so I chose to switch stories.

I first scoured the internet for a creepy underscore that could set the tone of the minute piece. Eventually I found on I liked and I exported it.

After finding this I used FreeSound.org to find the correct sound effects to create the experience. Through the use of Audacity software I created one file that told the story.

This the end product.

Pressure Project 1-Fortune Teller

My original idea for this pressure project was a flash game type experience where you had to answer questions to get an outcome. In the quick nature of the project I couldn’t quite figure out how to make each of the questions matter so i made the first two questions red herrings.

This first image is from my pre-show screen. Instructing the audience to use the space bar.

This image is of one of my question pages, that included keyboard watchers, so you could answer with typing corresponding letters and  Text Draw actors, shapes actors or picture payers, depending on which question you were on.

Most of my process was pretty linear and fluid. I was unsure of how to structure the program, so I did it the way I was most comfortable, which was like cueing a lighting board. Each change is within a new scene.  I learned from the VR class last year that clear instructions are paramount, so I worked hard to make sure it was easy to figure out what you needed to do.

Reflections-

I definitely needed to add sound to the experience, it was very stark without the sound. Otherwise, other improvements could have been made by stretching the amount of possible answers, making more questions and linking them together, or possibly finding ways to make infinite loops. I also should have accentuated the troll face in the crystal ball at the end a bit more.
