Cycle 2 Project

Naiya Dawson

For Cycle 2 I wanted to utilize the rest of the time left in the semester as well as the resources that we have in this class to create examples of concepts that I may use for my senior project. I am still going to use the live drawing aspect that I created in Cycle 1 but for Cycle 2 I wanted to play with a new idea that I had. For this Cycle I gathered videos that I had of my friend dancing and then also videos I had of different beaches and bodies of water. I used isadora to layer and combined the different videos that I want to later project in the motion lab. I created two different scenes and with in the two scenes there are videos on 3 stages. Each stage contains two or three videos that I layered together and I want to continue to play with video effects and new ways videos can be presented in isadora. I created 3 stages because I want to present each stage on three projectors in the motion lab. I attached videos of my isadora patches and video clips of the videos I used.

For Cycle 3 I want to work on moving this to the motion lab and added the concepts I created in Cycle 1. I also want to add music and research ways I can have an interactive part of my project. I am also thinking about actors in isadora that I might want to add the the videos.

Cycle 1

For my cycle 1 project I started to play with and create patches that I can have as my foundation for the rest of my cycle projects. I used the live drawing actor in isadora to create what you see in the images and videos above. Working with live drawing was very fun because there are so many ways you can manipulate the actor and add different effects to it. I first worked on how to set up the live drawing actor then I took some time and went through the different affects I could add to see what I would like. I used affects like swirl, color, kaleidoscope and more. After I found all the effects I liked I worked on taking a video of the live drawing so I could present my work with out actually having to move the mouse and create the live drawing on the spot. Taking videos of the live drawing in isadora was successful because I was able to layer some videos and see the drawings I was able to create. I used the capture stage to movie actor to create the videos and then I create a new isadora patch so that I could just have the videos in each scene. This helped me optimize my work and make it easier to present.

Thinking about the start of my cylce 2 project I want to take what I have and make it interactive. I want to start working in the motion lab to get ideas on what I can do and how this will be projected. I have also been thinking about adding music and seeing if there is a way I can have music interact with live drawing or maybe the videos of the live drawing.

Pressure Project 3

Naiya Dawson Sound Project

My idea for the sound project was to find different sounds that represent me in different ways. I tried to find sounds on the site Freesounds.org that match the music and rhythm that I was envisioning in my head. I started with gathering and downloading all of my sound files and then I organized them in a way that was interesting to me. I then used garage band to edited and overlap my sounds together.

For my sounds specifically I started off with a rain/water fall sound. The sound of rain and water has always been something I enjoyed and something that helps me relax. I then added in a jazz music sound, african drums, afrobeats, and a ballet class sound to represent parts of my dance background.

For my pressure project 2 my idea was to create an interactive door bell/smart house alarm system. I started by researching the makey makeys and different ways they can be used interactively. I found videos explaining how people used the to create doorbells either by creating it to work with a door mat, a piece of paper, or hangers. This was very helpful for me to understand how to use the makey makey. After figuring out the makey makey idea I went into isadora and create scenes that related to the house alarm/ door bell. I created scenes that used sounds such as a normal ding dong for the door bell and then one for the security alarm noise. The next couple seems contained messages I thought would be cool to have as a going away or welcoming message at the door bell. The last few scenes were used with cameras and my idea was to show different ways motion could be detected or some type of surveillance. For the makey makey I used a piece of a cereal box and wrapped a piece of aluminum foil around it. I then added the clips from the makey makey on to both sides. This allowed my to create a touch door bell so that when I hit the makey makey with my finger it started my isadora patch and you could hear the ding dong sound.

I think the most challenging part of the project was actually coming up with an idea and adding in the makey makey to it. I enjoyed how this project showed me how much of isadora I have learned and now understand. I started with my isadora patch and after creating for a little while I started to get way more ideas.

To improve my pressure project or add more concepts to the experience I think it would have been interesting to play with projection. I think this would have made my project way more engaging and challenged me to use more resources. I think it would also be cool to play with space and see the result of my project in different places and settings if I were to try incorporating the projection aspect. I also enjoyed seeing my classmates projects and ideas it was really inspiring to see and it helped me see all the different possible resources available and how they can be used.

I have added pictures of some of my isadora patch and my makey makey button.

Pressure Project 1

For my project I chose the idea of the parcel pending lockers in the lobby of my apartment building. I have been working there for a little over a year, and I thought this would be a perfect example for this project because I see people interacting with them everyday. Right now my apartment building only has two sets of these lockers and I think we have around 400 bedrooms so most of the time the front office staff (me) has to log and store the packages because there is to many.

To start my project I observed the human interaction with these package lockers for over an hour. Since I work there it was easy for me to observe this multiple different times throughout the week. I then drew out a small basic diagram of the packages lockers and also created a canva collage of what the lockers look like in real life. After this I then wrote down how the lockers work, and problems with them, ways to improve them, and what heroic invention/ improvements would be.

The improvements I would add to the packages lockers would be to create a smart package room. This would be placed some where so that delivers can access it from out side the building and they wouldn’t have to worry about the apartment doors being locked and the residents can access it inside. So like a door that goes outside and a door from the inside. In this package room there would be robots, one that organizes that packages on to shelf’s and puts then outside the door when residents are ready to get them and the there would be a couple delivery robots that can take packages to people’s rooms. This would help make computerized package storing more accessible, easier for everyone, and help packages not get lost or stolen.

After we presented our projects I did some final touch ups to everything. I drew a better diagram of both how my idea was normally and then after with the heroic changes. I did this while observing the lockers again trying to find small details I didn’t catch better. After I created my new diagrams I thought about the conversations we had in class and anything that I wanted to add from that. Then I finished by reflecting on everything and creating this post.
